L-1A vs L-1B: Which Intracompany Transfer Visa Fits Your Role?

A side-by-side comparison of the L-1A executive/manager track and the L-1B specialized-knowledge track, and how to pick the right one.

A side-by-side comparison of the L-1A executive/manager track and the L-1B specialized-knowledge track, and how to pick the right one.

The L-1 visa splits into two tracks, and choosing the right one matters because they lead to different durations and different green card paths. L-1A is for managers and executives. L-1B is for employees with specialized knowledge. Picking the wrong one invites a denial.

L-1A: managers and executives

This track is for people who manage an organization, a department, or a function, or who direct the company at an executive level. It allows a longer maximum stay (up to seven years) and aligns neatly with the EB-1C multinational manager green card.

L-1B: specialized knowledge

This is for employees with specialized knowledge of the company’s products, services, processes, or procedures that isn’t commonly held. Maximum stay is shorter (up to five years), and the green card path is less direct than L-1A’s.

How to pick

Start with what the person actually does. If they direct people or a key function, L-1A. If their value is deep, company-specific expertise rather than management, L-1B. Don’t stretch a specialized-knowledge role into a manager label, because USCIS tests the substance.

Why the choice has consequences

Beyond duration, L-1A’s tie to EB-1C makes it the stronger long-term play for leadership hires. L-1B is harder to extend into permanent residence and faces tougher scrutiny on what ‘specialized’ means.
